Creativity demands change and renewal, like life itself. This exhibition of new works at Galeria Uno is veteran artist Judith Morlan’s break with what she has done before.
Inspired by the “Group of Seven,” a Toronto based fellowship of landscape painters of the 20th century; Judith has transformed her usual style into an unmapped territory. With these canvases she has found a way to renew and challenge herself.
“I wanted to do a wide variety of work, even if I failed to communicate, it was an opportunity to grow rather than producing what is expected of me,” The Group of Seven were painters who went out into the surrounding countryside to draw on inspiration from nature. Their bold colors: impasto surfaces; and passionate drawing reflected their connection to nature as a source of healing from city life.
Judith draws on the same inspiration in her new works. For her, art is not production but revelation. She has trekked to the countryside outside of Puerto Vallarta for her subject matter in order to commune with nature and call our attention to what we must preserve.
Three canvases in particular, “Birth of the River,” “Waterfall in the Moonlight,” and “Beginning of a Perfect Day,” reveal Judith’s deepest convictions: renewal in the midst of the darkest times is possible. In these impassioned works, the clear waterfalls emerge from the shadows to bring us life and hope. Included in the show are whimsical drawings in black and white from Judith’s collection. There are many delightful sketches of beach vendors, beach houses, tropical scenes, and even fat ladies having fun!
Judith Ewing Morlan has exhibited in Vallarta for nearly 20 years. She is tireless worker and friend to many artists. Her new show proves her spirit and creativity has not dimmed but has leaped to new directions.
“Nature is the ultimate answer to the maze we are in. I wanted to apply paint differently for the joy of doing it. This show is my breakthrough.”
The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours at Galeria Uno, Morelos #561, El Centro, Telephone: 222-0908
