Mestizo Restaurant, on Abasolo Street, downtown, is one of favorite places for dinner, because it makes it possible for us to taste the marvelous culinary art of Chef Karla Morales, with her exquisite creations of the Contemporary Mexican Gourmet Cuisine.
Mestizo restaurant is nested in a sober, beautiful house that has been decorated to enhance its architectural features, and it offers the option to dine indoors or alfresco on the terrace or in the garden.
cabreriaAs the afternoon progresses into evening, daylight vanishes into dim tones of red and green, and the atmosphere suggestively transforms into one of romanticism, very conducive to a candlelit intimate dinner,  quite apropos to the upcoming Valentine’s Day.
The night we visited the restaurant, we met again the friendly, attentive staff, and enjoyed as always its courteous, professional service.
To our delight, Mestizo is keeping its regular menu, and just from reading it, it causes your mouth to water.
We sipped our aperitifs as we read the menu, and as appetizers we chose some of our all-time favorites. Letty renewed her devotion to the smoked salmon Carpaccio, with shrimp Napoleon, dried Jocoque (sour cream), and dressed with chili pepper vinaigrette. In turn, I indulged in the Creole seafood soup, a combination of scallops, octopus, fish and shrimp au flambé served with Mezcal and a touch of Poblano pepper custard. This delicacy is quite aromatic; from the moment it was brought to the table it flooded the air with its essence. It enticed everyone at the table, to the point where Letty could not resist and asked me to let her try it. The look on her face said it all. I know what she’ll be ordering next time.
interiorAt main courses, Estefanía, who joined us for dinner at Mestizo for the first time, ordered the Beef filet with gratin potato, crispy smoked ham and cocoa-mescal sauce. Letty, in turn, enjoyed the Shrimp “Al Pastor” Style, with roasted Pineapple, cilantro risotto and garlic crabmeat, bathed in Orange Sauce. The Cabreria, once again, caught my eye. This northern Mexico cut of beef has a flavor of its own. It is served grilled, with a side dish of black beans, grilled cactus paddle and costeño pepper sauce. I paired it to a robust dry red with nutty aromas. It was wonderful.
At dessert time, the Metate-made cake with coconut ice cream and a warm chocolate sauce was a hit. Everyone enjoyed it with coffee, to bring a wonderful dinner experience to a close on a high note.
Mestizo will be open on Valentine’s Day. Mestizo is open for dinner Monday to Saturday, 6 to 11 p.m. Closed on Sunday. Abasolo 233, Centro. Tel. 222 1333 www.mestizovallarta.com
