Agave Grill’s Excellent Modern Mexican Cuisine

Last Monday we had dinner at Agave Grill, a restaurant-Tequila bar that for some mysterious reason we had not visited before, but now we congratulate ourselves for visiting.
ajillo octopusAgave Grill is located on Morelos street, downtown and it is a very nice place, decorated in an old Mexican style, with high vaulted ceilings. The bar, near the entrance, makes me think that this is how a cantina in an old Mexican town must have looked like. In a nutshell, the place has character.
Maitre d’ Juan Jose Arreola is an excellent host, who we have known for a number of years. He belongs in a generation of Vallartenses who made a profession out of hospitality and gave Puerto Vallarta a reputation of friendly city.
The kitchen team is made up of Chef Armando Aguirre, Sous-chef Juan Pablo Valencia and cold kitchen Chef Erick Alejandro Reyes. They produce true culinary creations that make the delights of diners.
insideAs we read the menu, a waiter came to the table with a cart, on which he had a traditional mortar and pestle and all the ingredients to prepare a sauce.
From the appropriately called “Small dishes” section, we tasted two appetizers, crab meat tacos and ajillo octopus. They were both superb. The crab meat tacos have a delicate flavor, and are served on a mirror of pureed olives, which only accents this delicacy.
The ajillo octopus was surprisingly light flavored, and served with crisp potato chips offering a contrasting texture and sesame seed covered avocado. It is an invitation to a very slow tasting.
three mole steakAs to main course, the menu offers great choices of fish, meat and poultry dishes. Letty decided to have achiote marinated fresh fish filet, which is known as “shepherd style”.
It is served with a grilled slice of pineapple, rice and vegetables. It was most delicious!
The short ribs with trio of Mole sauces just caught my eye. They are served with plantain puree and rice. It was splendid! The three moles are a feast and the ribs are braised to perfection, the meat just melts in your mouth.
