Nautical Extravaganza is an unprecedented series of events for lovers of the ocean, nautical sports and culture from February 18 to March 20 at Riviera Nayarit, which seeks to position itself as the nautical destination in the Mexican Pacific seaboard.
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle with its modern , innovative Marina Riviera Nayarit will be the venue for most of these events, while the Vallarta Yacht Club in Nuevo Vallarta will be alternate venue for Nautical Extravaganza, which includes seven events under the umbrella of the Nextel Mexico Cup Regatta, Bicentennial Edition, plus the 2010 editions of the Vallarta Race and the Bahia de Banderas Regatta, the Latin America Boat Show and the first stage of the 2012 challenge with woman sailor Tania Elias.
The core of the Riviera Nayarit Nautical Extravaganza is without doubt the Mexico Cup Regatta which will bring together sailing competitions of all classes and categories, as well as international beach soccer and beach volley ball tournaments.
Activity will kick off on February 18, when vessels participating in the Vallarta Race are flagged off at San Diego, in a race that will finish in Vallarta Yacht Club.
The Mexico Cup Regatta, will be held between February 27 and March 13. Mexorc competitions are first in the program, and will run from Feb. 28 and March 6.
J24 Class competitions, the fastest in the world of sailing, start March 5 and close on March 12. The Optimist class, in which younger sailors participate, will participate simultaneously, along with Kite surf and Windsurf specialties. Also, beach soccer and volley ball clinics and tournaments will be held on the beaches of Bucerias and Nuevo Vallarta.
On March 2, the arrival of Tania Elias Calles is expected in Riviera Nayarit, thus completing the first stage of the 2012 Challenge, in which she will have crossed the Gulf of Cortez after sailing nearly four days.
The Nautical Extravaganza continues with the Latin America Boat Show, with the best of the marine industry in the world, showing the latest in vessels, accessories and supplies.
Closing on a high note, the traditional Bahia de Banderas Regatta held annually, will take place between March 16 and 20.
Not to be missed: In February and March it is still possible to watch whales. Remember how important it is to preserve this wonderful species; the recommendation is to use tours certified by the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat. Certified boats can be identified by the official flag they display.
