Great Fishing on International Riviera Nayarit Tournament’s Final Day
Puerto Vallarta Being Promoted in Phoenix and Dallas
The Tourism Board of Puerto Vallarta maintains a busy schedule by participating in both national and international events through its Promotion Department

It was around 8:30 last Saturday, August 14, right after getting the bait, that Adrian Garcia Menchaca, from Los Tolos team, had a marlin bite in La Piedra area. Three-and-a-half hours later, he finally reeled it in. He insisted, since he wanted to catch a tuna, but there was no luck. “It doesn’t matter, with this animal we needed nothing else” he would say after the marlin was weighed at 218.7 kilograms, enough to earn Tepic first place in the category.
Earlier, a 133.4-kilo black marlin had been landed by Mark Martin aboard Tiburon. This specimen had dethroned Milonga’s Carlos Menchaca, who had taken the leading position the Friday before. Menchaca, chairman of the Tepic Sport Fishing Club, was pushed down to third place.
On closing day there were two regulation catches of yellow-fin tuna. The first one to arrive was caught by Gonzalo Leaño, from the Ocho Columnas team, at 47.5 kilograms, which got away with the first prize.
About 9 a.m., team captain Ernesto Herrera saw a school of dolphins and a flock of birds near the school, in the surroundings of Maria Cleofas Island (one of the Marias), and as soon as he went by he hooked the tuna, which put up a great fight for about one hour and 40 minutes.
“It is truly a great privilege to fish in Riviera Nayarit, and I believe it has been a wise move of Governor Ney Gonzalez to promote the destination with such force, because it is beautiful. The governor has done a great job, and we are seeing those efforts come to fruition” Ernesto Herrera said.
Estatica Team took second place in the category with a 42-kilo specimen, while Luis Blanco, aboard Snapper took first prize for the sailfish category, with the sole capture registered on Friday. The Mahi-Mahi contest was declared desert.
After the award ceremony around 6 p.m. participating teams, families, friends, sponsors and special guests attended a thank you cocktail party at the Marina Riviera Nayarit Yacht Club.
