OLast night we had dinner at The River Café, and we were excited to learn that there is an Italian Festival going on throughout the month of August. The creative minds at The River Café have designed a spectacular menu with excellent choices from which to enjoy a three course dinner for a fixed price of 199.00 pesos.
We arrived at the restaurant a little after 8 and we were shown to a table by the gardens. After ordering our aperitifs we set out to study the festival menu. Needless to say, Italian cuisine, right up there with Mexican cuisine, is my favorite.
lasagnaThe atmosphere at the restaurant is quite pleasant. It is located on the Cuale River Island, and the river bank in front of the restaurant has been transformed into a lush, fresh  garden. Above the river waters, on an elevated platform, a gazebo provides a very special spot for an intimate dinner or a family group gathering around the table.
The menu offers three choices of appetizers, from which I chose the Minestrone soup, a classical Italian. It tastes a lot like home.  Letty, as she loves salads, had the Caprese, proof of the simple deliciousness of the Italian cuisine. Fresh tomato, mozzarella, basil and olive oil make up this refreshing appetizer.
trovadoursAt main courses, I couldn’t resist having baked lamb lasagna; simply, unquestionably delicious. Perfect pasta filled with lamb, wild mushrooms, and goat and mozzarella cheeses, bathed with tomato basil sauce, and crowned with grated Parmesan. Every mouthful is a delight. I took the Maitre D’s suggestion and paired my lasagna to an Argentinean Malbec.  It was superb, and only enhanced the pleasure of tasting.
ravioliBaked crab ravioli caught Letty’s eye, they were bathed in a light cream garlic sauce, baked with Parmesan cheese au gratin. A clean plate was proof of how much she loved the ravioli.
We both chose the same dessert, Chocolate dip cannoli with mixed berries cream filling. She accompanied hers with a cappuccino, and I had an espresso.
Congratulations to the chef were in order. Once again we marveled at their delectable culinary creations, this time around with dishes of Italian origin. The festival continues throughout August at The River Café, Cuale River Island, locale 4. Open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tel. 223 0788 www.rivercafe.com.mx
